HIGHLAND HERITAGE COSTA RICA

Sunrise (5am) over Highland HeritageHighland Heritage Costa Rica is a private nature reserve and spiritual retreat nestled in a unique and secluded site high up in the rugged Talamanca Mountains of Costa Rica.

Fiery-billed Aracari at Highland HeritageThe 2,000+ acres are host to a wide range of wildlife and some 400 species of birds. Our large bird observatory is well placed to take advantage of not only the avian life but also the wildlife - particularly the monkeys, both White-face and Spider (endangered).

Here is all but a lost world, reached by an almost impossible 'road', where the mist and clouds drift and hug the mountains creating a scene that is more reminiscent of a Jules Verne or Conan Doyle movie.

Waterfall at Highland HeritageWaterfalls abound - perhaps 100 in all - from the smallest to the single-drop 80-metre (260-feet) major falls reached by a challenging 4-5 hour (each way) hike. Huge trees, vibrant orchids, tropical plants, and natural springs make for a setting that is as exotic as it is dramatic.

Overlooking the ponds at Highland Heritage Highland Heritage is not only a nature reserve, where our buildings and facilities blend harmoniously within the landscape, but more a secure retreat and escape from the toxic manifestations of the 21st century. Here, we have little dependency on the outside world and are far removed from its influences. Freedom from worry is one of the hardest things to find these days.

Our extensive rock and water gardens with perpetual fountains are recreative to the senses, guest quarters are relaxing with natural woods and a frontier flavour, Winston Smith's homecook eatery is what you would expect back in the mountains - no artificial ingredients. At the Orwell Truth Centre you can take your choice from charming old movies to finding out what the government is really up to. Natural remedies replace toxic prescriptions and contaminated inoculations, and a healthy environment rapidly revitalises defiled body systems.

At our 5,000-7,000 feet altitude (1,500-2,000 metre) in the cloudforest it is often hard to believe that we are just 9 degrees from the equator. Our climate is as near perfect as you could possibly get with rarely a day too hot or too cold.

Visiting is an adventure in itself.
